A Day by The Lake

Little Green House (home of Kniterary, Hedgehog Stitchery, Soul Xpression and Tarmina Designs spent Saturday by Lake Ontario celebrating Harbour Days. It was a beautiful day with just the right amount of breeze and one of the Tall Boats to feel dwarfed by.

We also made alot more new friends under or tent. We had wares for sale and beading for children and let people know about us.

Our newest banner looked great!

New Nora Gaughan book!

I just got a Berroco shipment in with some Ultra Alpaca and Sox Metallic.

There is an Ultra Alpaca colour of yellow that is stunning! Butter meets golden sunshine yellow! I want to dive in!

Oh...and other colours too!

Also I got the New Nora Gaughan book. I am linking you to my favorite of the book! But all the patterns are up to Miss Nora's high quality!

World Wide Knit In Public Day

This past Saturday was World Wide Knit In Public day. Kniterary celebrated by inviting all customers (old and new) to come and knit outside the shop for the day.

Among the many people who came to celebrate the day at Kniterary were Ruth and Lindsay from Georgetown. They will apparently be joining another WWKIP event this coming Saturday in the Guelph area. They are sure to enjoy their company as much as we did. It is always good to make new knitting friends!

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't in agreement with all the people who were knitting in public, and forced us all inside. We didn't let the weather get us down and moved the fun upstairs.

It wasn't long before there was much more than just knitting going on.

People were spinning and stitching also.

Over-all the event and experience left all feeling accomplished with the progress on their knitting, stitching, spinning, etc and enriched by our time communing with fellow fiber lovers!

The raffle was won by Elizabeth R who came into the shop with 9 members of the guild from Georgina. They spent an hour or more discovering all the nooks and crannies of The Little Green House! Thanks for the visit ladies!

We hope to see them and you all in the shop soon!

Studio Tour 2011

Tarmina Designs will show-case their Tea Rose Cozies and Flower Brooches this year during the 2011 studio tour.

Tea Rose Cozies

The Tea Rose Cozies are knit on 4mm needles with Manos del Uruguay Classica Wool in a round. Three roses are added to the top of the cozies to give them a more decorative feel. They are a rather quick and basic knit with classic embellishments. What makes these tea cozies an ideal knit is the easily adjustable openings for the spout and handle, so it can custom fit any tea-pot.

The finished Tea Rose Cozies are being sold for $40.00 and the pattern will be available for $5.00.

Flower Brooches

The brooches have a rug hooked the center, and proddy hooked petals done by Martina Munroe. Then the entire thing is backed with leather. Once the base it together Tara Bergeron hand beads each one uniquely. To add a little more fancy the petals are made from dyed-wool and tulle. What makes these Flower Brooches so appealing is that they can be used for many things, such as; hat embellishments, and blouse/jacket pins.

The finished Flower Brooches are being sold for $35.00 and a class is available for $45.00.

During the studio tour Tara Bergeron will also be showing some of her other bead work (http://www.soulxpression.com/) and as usual the Kniterary will be open for people to browse through all yarns and supplies.

Last weekend Tara came in and taught the Bunzilly Embellishing class!

Four of us had lots of fun creating our little characters while we learned some new skills.

Socks, Hearts and Angels

I have finally posted the classes currently planned for this spring on the Kniterary website so head on over and have a look a what is coming up.

Among the classes is a heart embellishing class that is being offered by Tara of Soul Xpressions. All you have to do is knit 3 small hearts and stuff them then bring them with you on February 5th for embellishing. The class and embellishing kit (enough for 3 hearts) is $15.

The pattern I used was Folk Hearts by Frankie Brown that is available free on line. One ball of Mirasol Sampa makes about 6 hearts and is $6.99 a ball. It could be a fun project to do with a child!

The Pull up Your Socks KAL continues with several people coming in to show me their progress. Sharon and Geri were in with a finished sock each.

I have also finished the final black sock.....FINALLY....Black sock weight is not my favorite to knit in but I love wearing them!

Just in to the shop is Debbie Bliss Angel..... A stunningly beautiful mohair, silk blend that knits up very light and feathery.

You have to see it in real life to really appreciate it!!!! There is a book with great patterns and the new Debbie Bliss Magazine (coming out soon) will have some patterns using Angel as well.

Remember that there are still 2 ongoing drop ins that you may join in at any time! Wednesdays 1- 3 and Thursdays 7 - 9.

Yes I am a person who suffers from SSS...It is sad but true... I hope this KAL will cure me! (Don't stop knitting)....

Sock number 1 is ....A Jaywalker.... Loved knitting it but go sidetracked....

Knit in a Berocco Sock yarn that is perfect for JayWalkers! Going to get more in with the next order! See the ball? That will be a sock next time you see it!

These next ones are BLACK and BORING ...yup that is my excuse...2 years in knitting..Would have fit my son when started....NOW they are for me. Lesson learned...I will never ever knitting plain st st black socks ever again! I just do not have the attention span. Will probably be my January sock just to get it off my UFO list. Yes the black blob in the middle of the photo is a sock.

The last pair I have to finish are a pair of Fair Isle Knee Highs I started for my friend Jen. Did one and it seemed small so I got her to try it on. Yes way too small... Into the frog pond and start again. Waaaaa... It was decided last week that knee high socks count as 4 socks so this should take me through 4 months.... blarg...

So that is my next 6 months of puyskal (Pull Up Your Socks Knit a Long).

I have the first photo already of a finished sock from Pam! Way to go!

It is hard to believe that December is already here!!!

I hope that you have all gotten a good start on you Christmas knitting!

On the shelves there are a couple of chunkier yarns available for those quick last minute scarves, hats and mitts. I have just completed a new scarf pattern called Ebb and Flow with Berocco Peruvia Quick. It is a fun short row quick knit perfect for both men and women. There is a photo of Rebecca's on her latest Kniterary Knews post.
Dates:

This Saturday December 4th Tara Bergeron of Soul Xpression will be showing and selling her jewellery upstairs at Our Little Green House. Items will be for sale at up to 50% off! She is also offering an embellishment class for the Tara Goddess Cowl from 1 - 2:30 PM. There is still time for you to knit up yours and come and take part!

Also on Dec. 4th the Santa Claus Parade will be going past the shop in the morning. You are welcome to use our porch as a home base and pop in for coffee or hot chocolate or to use the washroom.

Thursday December 16th is our pot luck Christmas Party! Mark it on your calender and join us. We will be having an ornament swap as well for those who are interested. More details to follow!

Ebb and Flow

Hello Everyone!

So this week there has been a lot of changes. We have changed around our displays, so some completed projects from upstairs are now downstairs. We have also changed our theme to Christmas (Have you started on your Christmas knitting yet?!?)

The main display features Martina's Christmas tree hats (Patterns now on sale), The Tomato that ate Christmas, Tara's cowl, as well as my knitted Rasta hat (Samuel, out of the Berroco Sundae and Peruvia Quick #299 book, made with Peruvia Quick colour 9123). On the same mannequin that my hat is on, Martina's Ebb and Flow scarf is around it's neck (her own design), out of the same color.

Also this week I began my own Ebb and Flow scarf using the red Peruvia Quick and the pink Sublime kid mohair held together (Pictures Above) and finished today (The ego boost when you finish a project in a couple days is great, isn't it?)

Hello Everyone, Long Time No Talk!

The last 2-3 weeks have been very eventful, with different kinds of customers coming in. One week we had an older couple in, with-wait for it-a man wanting his wife to knit him a sweater! We also had a woman come in all the way from California. Everybody will probably be wishing they could go there over the next couple months when the cold weather comes along.

I also started working on Halloween items for the store, one of which is an amigurumi spider from the boom Amigurumi Knits by Hansi Singh. Hopefully it will get finished by Halloween this weekend. Hopefully.

And, all of us who looked after the store while Martina was on vacation in Newfoundland are all very appreciative that she is back!

Hello, my name is Rebecca.

This week has been really busy! We have just gotten in a new yarn from Manos, called Maxima. Coming in with 10 different variegated colors; we have also gotten in more Manos Silk Blend, with 5 more colors, including black.

A shipment also came in from Dye-Version, with a hand dyed Bamboo Sport yarn called Florida Sunshine. And for all those sock lovers out there, we have 7 more balls of hand dyed sock yarn as well.

Apart from the yarn, we also held the Culture Days here at the Kniterary. We had Tara; the owner of Soul Xpression come in and teach people how to do beading, and Kim, the owner of Penny Heaven come in to show people how to make pennys, a craft from the 1800s.

Be sure to look for us in the next issue of Snap'd!

Knit-a-Longs!

Just throwing this out there!

Two of us are going to be starting to knit the Cloisonne Jacket in September. Would anybody like to join in? It is knit out of Ultra Alpaca and takes 6 for the smallest size (38" bust) and and 12 for the largest size (54" bust). (I will be doing the size that takes 9 balls total.)

Cost will range from $60 to $120 depending on size. If you mention you are buying Ultra ALpaca for this knit along you will get 15% off the yarn.

The pattern is in the Fall 2010 Interweave knits.

Also, What do you think about starting a bag together. I will be starting Plein Air from the Fall 2010 Interweave knits on the 10th which is the first meeting of the Kniterary Literary Club. You can join the book club and knit with me if you want!

The bag looks like a good knitting, book bag.

Think it would be a fun addition to the club. The bag can be done in Peruvia for about $64 (yarn only) Again if you mention that you are purchasing the yarn for the knit-a-long you will receive 15% off the yarn.

August is almost over and I have started planning the classes for the fall/winter season.

Classes will start on Saturday, October 2nd with 2 Saturday mornings of Beginner Classes. 9 -12 each day. $45 for the both days. If you know anyone who is eager to learn to knit let them know!

August has arrived!
Along with it the fall yarns are starting to arrive at Kniterary!

It feels like Christmas every time!!

Speaking of Christmas...Time to get started on your gift list!

I was looking over the sock yarns yesterday and realized that there are 12 different brands on the shelves! And that is not taking into account the assortment of colours there are. Most recently arrived are new Arequipa, Noro Silk Garden, Berroco metallic Sox and Jawoll Magic. So much to choose from! I have a great selection of sock patterns in as well and when you buy 100 grams of sock yarn you can pick up a pattern at half price!

Other yarns that have come in are:
The new Berroco Campus yarn with some great patterns. It is a chunky yarn so will be great quick knitting! There is a sample of a T-shirt in the shop

and
New colours of Silk Garden Worsted weight. Always beautiful!

I am expecting another Berroco shipment any day as well as Mission Falls and Manos del Uruguay.....OOOh...The anticipation!

Summer is Really Here!

It has been hot I know.
But

It is never too hot to be knitting or crocheting! Small projects are the key.

Such as Socks.....
See! Brenda is knitting socks with the Indian Spices sock yarn that The Sweet Sheep dyed for our Knit in Public day celebration!

Oh, by the way, there are still 3 skeins in the shop! I still am planning on doing a shawl with mine like Marion is....oops....forgot to take a photo.... But here is the yarn!

Make Summer the time to get started on your Christmas knitting and crocheting! Socks, mittens,hats and scarves are all small projects that will not make you hot on the beach.

You could take the summer to knit something that requires meditative concentration but is very light weight! Lace! Yes Lace...

Come into the shop and see the Queen Anne's Lace Patterns and the lace weight yarns. There is sure to be something that you'll want to knit!

I am off to the cottage this weekend and I am bringing 2 projects with me. One is a modification to the Striation Shawl....with cables! The other is the Mint t-shirt. I will share my progress when I return!

June is Almost Here

June is here in 2 days!

The month of brides and the longest day of the year and Knit in Public day!

Kniterary will be celebrating this year by offering a class for the Striation Shawl at 9 AM on June 5th . On June 12th I will be running my beach bag class and also putting up our Gazebo again for all who want to join us for the celebration.

June 1st is my 25th Anniversary so ALL Kniterary stock will be 25% off for the day! Hours are 11 AM to 6 PM. Be sure to pop in!

Rug Hooking this Weekend

I am knitting Baktus with 2 skeins of Manos Serena. This sumptuous alpaca/pima cotton yarn is so soft and pleasing to knit with! The scarf is about 1/2 done now. I am striping two rows of blue and 2 rows of beige. Feels and looks like the desert and the sky!

I am wearing the Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton Summer Striped Scarf from the newest Vogue magazine. Just perfect for a cooler spring day like today!

Summer Yarns are in the Shop!

Sublime has a beautiful, beautiful yarn called Bamboo and Pearls. It drapes so wonderfully. Come in and check out this tank top knit in it!!

This child's vest is knit in Mirasol's Samp'a. It is a a naturally dyed organic cotton that is wonerful to work with and soft to the touch. Perfect for children's garments. The vest is from a Sublime pattern book but there is now a Samp'a book available too.

Summer Scarves are a big accessory this year! This scarf is knit with Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton. Pima is my favorite cotton to knit with. Come and check out the scarf ideas!

Lariat's are what I seem to be in to these days! Another version of a summer scarf really. This one is an I-cord knit in cotton . I have several in the shop done and ready to wear!

Last but not least is the Debbie Bliss Amalfi. I have knit myself this tank and I loved the knit. A really nice summer yarn. It is in the shop for viewing for a bit before I have to wear it for summer!

Kniterary and Hedgehog Stitchery are putting together an ad to go into the Spring Whitby Downtown magazine. I got Rhea to do a photo shoot of some of the items in the shop. She did a wonderful job! I want to share a few of the photos with you.

March to the Yarn!

What an exciting first of March I am having today!
Not only is the weather beautiful but the Spring yarns are starting to arrive!!

Last week Debbie Bliss Amalfi,

Pure Silk

and Eco baby

made their way to the shelves. The Amalfi books sold out before I finished unpacking! Not to worry though new ones came in today!

Then! Berocco sent the new colours of Seduce along with the pattern book that is already on re-order (there is still one in the shop though!)

Today! First in was the new Cascade Ultra Pima. Beautiful colours, sheen and texture!

This pattern can be found in the new Vogue Knitting (Also in today!). The Ultra Pima is a dk weight and would be a good substitute for Debbie Bliss Prima.

Then! (it's not over yet!!) The newest Sublime yarn called Bamboo & Pearls made it through the door (I love the Canpar man!!) This yarn is made from 70% bamboo sourced Viscose and 30% pearl sourced Viscose. You could be wearing your pearls in a new way!

A pattern book came with the yarn and is as beautiful as all Sublime pattern books are!

Tomorrow I will show you some pictures of patterns that can be found in the three magazines that came in today as well. They are Vogue Spring/Summer 2010, Interweave Knits Spring 2010 and Knitters Spring 2010.

January Blahs...

Does anybody have the January blahs?
I seem to today.
It is grey and rainy when it should be snowy and sunny.
How do you overcome the blahs?

I overcome them by picking something inspiring and colourful to knit. So I have picked up a small sharf (shawl/scarf) from the latest KnitScene called Emily to knit. It is a fun lace knit that can be done in a 4 ply or a lace weight yarn. I have chosen a 4 ply Malabrigo sock yarn from my personal stash. I think that it would also be stunning in any of the Cadenza sock weight that I have on the shelves.

This Mandy Moore Pattern is an easy to follow lace. It starts off small so by the time you are doing longer rows the pattern is solidified in the brain. At least that is what I am finding.

Don't you just love that orange? I feel surrounded by warmth when I knit with it.

If you are looking for something colorful to knit with there is now 3 shades of Silk Garden Sock in the shop and 5 colors of Silk Garden worsted weight.

The Silk Garden Sock is wonderful combined with Cadenza and knit into a simple triangular shawl. I have Emily's in the shop for inspiration!
About a year ago I knit a Log Cabin Blanket with Silk Garden Worsted and I think I am about to revisit that knit just to play with colour. I will get out my sample at the shop and dig up the basic pattern for anyone who is interested.

Also in my project pile is my latest tree. I am knitting a 3 dimensional Ash Tree. So far I have the main trunk done and I am prepping to start dividing it into smaller sections. This has led me on wanders through the neibourhood to analyze how an Ash tree branches out. I have also been really taken with the colors of the mosses that grow on Ash trees. Wandering outside, even on dull days, seems to banish the blahs for a bit too.

Knew Year Knews.....

January is here and it is time for me to blog again. I hope to be able to keep my new blogyear resolution and blog a bit more frequently. Notice I place no time or frequency restrictions on myself! I am not a total fool!!

December saw me knitting many quick and simple shawls for presents...oh.. and one for myself. I have written out a simple template for doing a triangular shawl so if anyone is interested ask me and I'll give you a copy.

I also spent time knitting several Slouchy Trees.

A few friends were wearing them around town and many people ended up in the shop to get either the pattern and yarn or the finished product. Yes the pattern is available for $3. Trying to get it on Ravelry. I've almost got it figured out!

What am I up to in 2010?

Well, I have promised myself I will become more familiar with crocheting. I will learn to read patterns and I will actually make a few things! Can you tell I am still convincing myself of this fact??? Knitting is my joy. Crocheting is not.

I have been having fun knitting a few of Susan B. Anderson's Chickens. One of them is for a late Xmas gift so there will be no picture here! (But there is a close up in the previous post.)

Tea Cozies are an excellent way to keep the tea as hot as can be!

Tea Cozies can be as easy as a hat to knit or they can be a canvas for any frivolity you would like to imagine!! You all know what side of that fence I fall on! (Even the Slouchy Tree could be a cozy!!) I am currently knitting a chicken tea cozy. I have been practising my fair isle technique on it. It is a great surface to practice or perfect a technique!

Ok Folks where did November go????

Hopefully you are all in the final stages of your Christmas knitting! I am in the process of knitting another simple shawl for my MIL with Pink Cadenza and Sublime Mohair combined. It is coming out a beautiful frothy pink decadence that I know she will love. No Picture yet but you can pop in the shop to have a boo! (OOps I am back in October!!)

If you are looking for quick last minute knits there are scarves, hats and mitts. A new quick scarf pattern that I designed is in the shop and takes only one ball of Peruvia. Peruvia is only $7.99 a skein so it is an inexpensive knit too!

There are the Slouchy hand warmers! These take 2 balls of Milli Colori at $8.99 a ball. Fun to knit and fun to give!

Speaking of things Slouchy the Slouchy Tree is very popular again this year. It can be made big enough to be a hat if one 2 skeins of worsted are held together and a 6mm needle used.

I just got in a slouchy hat pattern from Oat Couture that can be done in DK or Worsted weight yarn

Surprise! October is here! Who knows where September has gone...if you do please let me know.
Through September the shop has been stocking up with lovely lovely yarns just for you!

The is a good compliment of sock yarns for your knitting pleasure and still some Regia on its way.

The latest arrival is Zephyr laceweight. This is an amazing yarn with - fantastic drape and gorgeous to knit with. It is 50% wool and 50% silk. One 2 oz. center pull ball is 630yards and it is very affordable at $15.50 per ball! The colour shown below is Blueberry. I have it and many other colours one the shelf right now!

Along with the Zephyr yarn I have brought in some shawl patterns from Queen Anne's Lace. She uses the Zephyr in her patterns. Pictured her is the Queen of the Earth Stole. Come in to see the other patterns I have!

It is not too late to start your Christmas knitting so make sure to get your yarn before you run out of time!

I am slowly and secretly working on a sweater for my new husband for Christmas!
Sorry for the terrible picture, but I have yet to figure out how to make a sweater progress shot look good!
This is Mission Falls tri colour yarn. I have a great love affair with Mission Falls and last year took Chris into the store to pick out what colour he would like and this is what we came out with...it's beautiful.
The pattern is Tom from the queensland collection. Ever since I met Jane Ellison at Kniterary during a workshop I have wanted to try some of her patterns...I love her simple yet classy approach and this sweater is both.
I have 15 of 26 inches of the back knit...whoo! I am hoping to have this done by mid October...Crossing my fingers and moving forward!!

Summer is just speeding by!!

The summer lull is over and new stock is arriving almost daily!

The new Berroco Blackstone Tweed is devine! Imagine a tweed without the scratch factor! Angora and mohair are added to the wool and my what a feel. There is a sample sweater in the shop to try on. I have already sold out of the booklet but more will be in soon!

I am knitting a pair of Jaywalker socks out of the Berroco Sox and they are turning out fabulous! To look at the ball you would never expect the result!

I have it in 2 other colourways too!

There is more Peruvia and new colours of Ultra Alpaca as well.

I have put some new fall classes on the website and there are more to add. The schedule will be made up as soon as Vickie and I have a moment together to work on it.

June is for Brides

I think that the dream wedding dress for a knitter is one that they have knit for themselves. For the most part the dresses that I have come across are one of a kind and oh so beautiful! Vogue spring 2008 had some nice patterns for wedding shrugs and a wedding dress.

This beautiful open lace work would float so beautifully and be so cool for the summer outdoor wedding. You could definitely change it to be a full length dress! It would probably take about as long to knit as a fine yarn sweater! I can see it in Svale or Debbie Bliss Prima or even Stork cotton.

On the more extravagant side these following dresses would take a fair bit of labour but they are striking! If I were hand knitting the dress on the right I would probably allow myself 6 months or so unless a knitting machine were used for the large plain areas! But, Oh, what a dream!!

Much more realistic and actually something a fair number of knitter brides are making for themselves is the bridal shawl or veil. Just make your preferred lace pattern out of some really fine lace weight yarn like the Misti Alpaca Lace or something slightly heavier like Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino to get this lovely diaphanous look.

Michelle of The Sweet Sheep is knitting a very simple shawl out of her own hand dyed. The gentle variations in a hand dyed yarn will make for a beautiful subtle statement. Like Michelle you do not have to go with white! Choose your favorite colour to make your wedding shawl out of!

I can't help it! I think that Vickie's newest shawl pattern would be beautiful knit in white or pastel HandMaiden Sea Silk would be a stunning addition to any bridal ensemble.

I also think that a nice simple triangular shawl would look great wrapped around a big brimmed hat for the wedding and afterwards! Even as a guest to a garden wedding this would be stunning!

Want something easier that takes less time? How about the Garter. This elopement Garter from Knitty is a very simple lace design adorned with ribbon.

How about some flowers that will never wilt??? There are many felted flower patterns that could be used to create your own unique bouquet.

Again Knitty has these Calla Lilies that would be perfect.

What ever you choose to make for your wedding it will be a piece that could be passed on to children!!

Already married?.....

Well you could always renew your vows just so you can have your own hand knit wedding!!

June is for Weddings

I have been working on the new window display these last few days and thinking about June and weddings.
I guess partly because June 1st is Jim's and my 24th Anniversary.
But it all starts with the wedding doesn't it? Some are simple, some are ornate but all are special to the couple. A public declaration of love for one another.

Since I have been thinking about weddings my window is becoming a knitted wedding theme. White knitted lace and flowers and froth. How and what does one do for a knitted wedding?
Well, I happened across an article in spring/summer Vogue 2008 that featured a knit wedding. All things knit including the cake!

What can you do to include knitted items in a friends wedding?

Lets start with the Bridal Shower. Mason Dixon Knitting has several great ideas including the Ballband Dishcloth Or the Moss Grid Hand Towel

The suggested yarn for this project is Louet's Euroflax Sport and although I do not have it on the shelves I can order it for you! I have the colour charts in the shop ready for your perusal!

Can you imagine drying dishes with hand knit Linen??? MMMM....

For a

little bit of fun you could knit the Felted Boxes to store gift items in!

Ok ....

I started a post and it got eaten! I will attempt to remember all that I was so eloquent about.

Creativity has been pouring out of me lately. I completed 2 more canvases that combine my fiber art and paint. Both are hanging in the shop so pop in to see!

Right now I am working on a Bra for Mardi Bra. Mardi Bra is a fund raiser for Priness Margaret and breast cancer research. Artists create bras to be modeled and to be bid on. The money made goes to help fight Breast Cancer. I have chosen to do Marigolds because Whitby was once the "Home of the Marigold" In the photo above the left one is just the base that I am building on. On the right one I have started to build the petals of the flower. I'll keep you updated on the progress!

Just in are 5 colours of Misti Alpaca Sock Yarn. They need to be petted! so come on in!!

Vickie has created a new shawl pattern!!!

The Flower and Leaves Lace Shawl is a beautiful triangle shawl knit in Handmaiden Sea Silk. (The Picture above is not in the Seasilk but you can come into the shop to see it until I get an updated pic)
To celebrate this event I have decided that we need a KAL!
It will start on May 30th with a morning class for those in need of help and are in the area.
Help right from the designer! What else could be better!

Hello All!

I hope you made it through your January knitting and crocheting projects! With all the snow it was certainly a great time to curl up and create!

February is a busy month at Kniterary with classes every Saturday and a new Monday evening Beginner Class starting.

Classes started this Monday with the first of Monday evening classes. It will run alternate Mondays so the next one is on Feb 16th. Even though it is a holiday I will still be teaching in the evening from 7PM to 9PM. The evenings will consist of a lesson and time for project help. Feb 16th's lesson is knitting in the round on Double pointed and circular needles.

On the other Mondays we are still running our sweater knit a long class. This Monday is the next meeting. You can join the KAL at any time since we will be running it until the end of June. To join it costs $30. For the $30 you will get a copy of the book The Purl Stitch by Sally Melville (from which you will choose a project) and 20% off your yarn purchase for the project you choose. Vickie and I will be at the classes to answer any questions and give guidance when it is needed. All projects must be knit with yarn purchased at Kniterary.

This Friday is Kniterary Literary night! We will be discussing Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See. The next book we will be discussing is BloodLetting and Other Miracles by Vincent Lam. The Kniterary Literary Group meets the first Friday of every month from 7PM - 9 PM. Everyone is welcome!

This Saturday is Sock day. At 10 AM is Sock Construction and cuff down mini socks on double pointed needles. The pattern and kit are provided. You will need to bring 2.5mm double pointed needles. The cost is $25. There are one or two spaces left in the class.

At 1 PM is Magic loop toe up mini socks. These are done on long circular needles. You will need to bring 2.5mm 140cm long circular needles. Yarn will be provided. The cost is $25.

On February 14th Vickie teaches her Finishing Techniques class. It runs from 10AM to 3PM. The cost is $45 and includes a light lunch. You have homework to do to prepare for the class so if you have signed up for the class make sure to pick up the pattern!! You will need to bring the Teddy Bear sweater parts with you. Also, you will need to bring the knitting needles that you used to do the homework, extra yarn and a darning needle. There are still a few spots available.

Saturday February 21st is the busiest day and has two classes. In the morning you can Learn to knit a Log Cabin style pillow top. The class is at 10AM. The class costs $35 and includes one ball of Noro Silk Garden Yarn. You will need to bring 4.5mm or 5mm knitting needles. This project can easily be continued and made into an afghan if so desired.

In the afternoon at 1PM the Paula Lishman Yarn Trunk Show arrives in the shop. We are starting the trunk show with a class on knitting with the fur yarn. The project is a scarf using Beaver Fur. The technique to be taught is the Lishman knit weave stitch. The cost for the class includes the scarf kit and is $105. There are 3 spots left! Deadline for signing up is February 14th! Don't miss this chance to knit with the softest yarn ever!

Art Yarns are now in the shop!! You have to come in to feel and see the luxury.

There are a few free patterns available to use with this decadent yarn. Art Yarns can be custom ordered as well. There are a multitude of colour selections and combinations of beads and sequins that can be spun into the silk and cashmere. Perfect for that very special shawl or wrap.

It is hard to believe that it is December already!!!
This weekend we are hosting a Christmas Prep weekend. There will be at
least 10% off everything all weekend and door prizes.

On Saturday Dec.6th you can come in and have a look at what is in stock

Afghan Knit-A-Long

The last afghan square was handed out last Friday! Now we start finishing. There are 2 dates I have set aside or coming in to get help with blocking, assembling and knitting a border. The first evening is today Wednesday, Nov. 5th from 7 PM to 9 PM. You will get help in blocking and the crochet assembly. The second is Dec. 3rd where I will be going over the border if anyone needs help. The border pattern will be handed out the last Thursday in November.

Sweater Knit-A-Long

We are meeting every other Monday until the end everyone's project is complete. The dates are marked on the calendar on the website. If you would like to join us you can. The cost is $30. With it you get a copy of Sally Melville's book the Knit Stitch, 20% off the purchase of your yarn for the project and help every other Monday.

Classes:
This month there are classes scheduled for Finishing Techniques on Saturday Nov 15th and Saturday November 22nd, and, for Magic Loop Toe Up Socks on Saturday Nov. 29th. Pop in or call to register!

Over the summer Michelle knit a wonderful sweater out of Mission Falls 1824 cotton in one of the newer colours. It turned out beautiful! It is on display in the shop for this month. come in and be inspired! Thanks to Michelle for sharing this project with Kniterary! Michelle also has a beautiful shawl on display. Michelle does lace so well! If you are interested in a lace class with Michelle in the new year let me know and I will get her in!

In progress is my wave piece for the Whitby Station Gallery submission.

I have used a combination of yarns and short rows to bring the wave into being. Among the yarns are; Noro Silk Garden and Silk Mountain, Debbie Bliss Astrakan, Naturally Tussock, Elsbeth Lavold Hempathy and a worsted wool that I had in my stash.

You can come in and see its progression since it is being worked on in our classroom.

Palace. A luxurious silk/wool blend worsed weight. The Borocco Pattern book has a couple of fabulous patterns for this sumptuous yarn!

Geode. A dk weight yarn that is similar to Jasper. Again there are great patterns in their books!

Also arrived from Berocco are 3 new colours of Ultra Alpaca and Peruvia Quick. Peruvia is a 100% wool Chunky yarn that has similar colours to the Ultra Alpaca. There is a fabulous afghan pattern for it. Cast on 120 stitches and away you go. Couldn't be quicker!

Just in this this last week...6 colours of Arequipa. AnAlpaca/merino/nylon sock yarn. Beautiful colours. Gorgeous to work with!

The pattern for the next square of the Garden path Afghan will be ready to be picked up Thursday evening. It is called the Fuschia stitch.

Only 2 more after this! Then we are on to assembly and edging. Woo HOO!

The Beautiful and talented Miranda finished her Amerlia Earhart Cap using Mirasol Hacho. It would be the perfect hat for under a bike helmet when the days get cooler. Also good as a chemo hat for the cooler weather.

Sorry Miranda...I just had to share this with every one!!

A few of you have come in to look at the new Titanium Needle Gauges by Debra's Garden and mentioned that the photo I took before made the dainty shell like beauties were much bigger. Here is another picture with my well battered thumb in it to give you some perspective.

August at Kniterary

You've seen them in Vogue and Interweave! Now they are at Kniterary! Debra's Garden Knitting needle sizers. They are beautiful! The holes go from 2mm to 10mm and will not wear down because they are made of titanium. The sizes are etched into the titanium so they will not wear off. So compact that you can wear them as a necklace or put them on your keychain. Each one comes in a colour coordinated organza bag like the one in the picture. They cost $15.99 each. What a perfect treat for yourself or gift for a fellow knitter!

There are also some new colours of Kureyon in and Mirasol Hacho. Come by and see the colours.

I have been knitting socks this summer along with other things. Problem is I am getting Single Sock Syndrome!

SEE!

I have been experimenting with short rowing on socks. The results are the 2 on the left of the photo. I love the idea of using up odd colours by doing short rows. The socks are based on the Rainbow Socks Pattern by Suzanne Kitzman. (Pattern is free on Ravelry). The sock that is 2 colours has been changed up a bit in proportion and I promise I will write the pattern! The sock on the right is out of Austermann Stepp. I love how my fingers feel when I am knitting with it! They are my hubby's birthday socks. I gave him the yarn and the promise of socks on his birthday in July.....I must get them done before the end of August!

I must find a way to get over this single sock syndrome!!! I know!!! I will take Vickies Magic Loop toe up sock class on November 29th!! Check out all the fall classes at Kniterary here.

Last (in this post) but not least I have been working on a Wedding Log Cabin Afghan. I am using 2 colours of Noro Silk Garden. Since it is a log cabin I started in the middle square and I am working out from there. A quick but luxurious knit. I think it will take 6 to 8 balls once the project is finished. So for around $80 and time spent enjoying the feel of knitting with Silk Garden I will have a wonderful wedding gift for a couple who loves colour. I am thinking of doing a class in it. If you are interested let me know.

Defeating the UFOs and Sweater Knit-along

Cathy sent us a photo of her finished project from the Finishing Class held in July. You prepare the knit pieces using instructions provided, so that in the class you learn three needle bind off (shoulder finishing), attaching rows to stitches (box sleeves), the mattress stitch (sides and raglan sleeves), picking up stitches (button band, neck) are used to finish this tiny sweater (it fits a small teddy bear or a Barbie and are the exact same methods used to finish a baby, child or adult sweater.

Everyone leaves feeling they have learned something that will help them in knitting their future projects. It is a class that will remove any fear about leaping beyond scarves, or just give you more confidence in defeating UFOs!

There is so much enthusiasm that in September Kniterary will be having a Sweater Knit-along, every other Monday night. You will get help in choosing a pattern, selecting appropriate yarn, deciding how to knit the pieces so that finishing is easier, and then finishing. We should all be able to finish a cardigan from September to June.

Slow Down

I was reading the Pea Soup blog the other day and she mentioned a movement called The Slow Movement. Well being that my natural state of being is slow I had to look it up! I love what the movement is all about!

That lead me to more research on all things slow. I stumbled across this site called Slow Down Now which is done tongue in cheek but has some valid messages I found. Do less slowly. Do one thing at a time, slowly and well.

Doing more investigating I came across this:

"Slow hobbies have never been hotter. The number of knitters under age 35 is up 50 percent since 1998, and two-thirds knit to reduce stress. "Studies show that the rhythmic, repetitive dance of the needles can lower heart rate and blood pressure, lulling the knitter into a peaceful state," according to In Praise of Slowness. Among the knitterati: Uma Thurman, Courteney Cox, and Debra Messing. "

(I will have to look up where I got that quote.)

Yes knitting is one of the slow hobbies. It will only do you good!

Now the big task is to do only one project at a time....well that isn't happening for me! But, the idea of doing one thing at a time, slowly and well seems to allow me to concentrate completely on the task at hand and not feel overwhelmed by all the projects that are waiting for me.

Are there types of knitting that are slower than other types? Is sock knitting the fast of the slow? Is lace knitting the slowest of the slow? What do you think?

What is the type of knitting that you do that makes you slow down and relax?

My favorite knitting is cables (if I have to follow a pattern). Most enjoyable for me though is just picking up the needles and some yarn and starting without a game plan. Usually it ends up being a bag of some description because sizing is no issue at all.

Hello Kniterarians!

Happy Canada Day!!
Can you believe that it is July 1st already??

Nothing like some knitting at the cottage or in the backyard to make July complete wouldn’t you say? There is not much I like better that relaxing under the trees in my backyard at home with a project on the go.

And what do I have on the go?? I continue to knit Nutkin socks in the Celebration Sweet Sheep yarn.
I have started the second sock. I am putting the finishing touches on a knitting bag for me. I knit it with recycled Sari Silk and Debbie Bliss Donegal Chunky Tweed. Slowly but surely I am knitting 2 shawls one out of Malabrigo Lace Yarn and the other out if some Dye-version Party Ribbon. I am also about to felt a bag that was inspired by left over Cascade 220 and Ella Rae Classic and Norval Morriseau. ( Pics of Nutkin to the left and Donegal Tweed & Sari silk to the right.)

The Garden Path Afghan Knit a Long

For the past 4 Months 12 people have been joining me in an Afghan Knit a Long. It is going to be a total of 9 Blocks all in cables that are garden themed. We are using Mission Falls 1824 wool.

Block number 1: Rose Garden

Block 2: Closed Bud

Block number 3: Stacked Buds

Block 4: Tulip cable

Block 5: Stacked Tulips (going home this Friday to be done)

We should have it done for Christmas. In the new year I will assemble the block Patterns and make a kit for the New Year. Also in the New Yesr we will be starting a Lace Afghan Knit a Long.

The Day We Knit in Public

The day started out with showers as we put up the gazebo as we prepared to receive knitters to help create a cozy for our tree.

Then the day cleared up and the knitters they came sitting inside at first because of the chill in the air. A photographer from Snap came and took pictures of our group which ranged from 6 to 60ish. I started to sew together some blocks around the tree. As I was I fertilized the ground beneath said tree with my favorite darning needle...sigh.

By the end of the day more had been added including a sweater UFO that now has wrapped it's arms around it in a great big hug. The locals think that the Kniterary lady is a bit crazy but I like it and I will continue to add to it and will encourage others to add to it. It will be fun to see how long it will actually stay on the tree!

The weather warmed up and while I sewed others knitted under the gazebo. Vickie is almost finished her contribution to the cozy and I hope she will sew it up herself (just kidding Vickie).

There were a dozen or so knitters who joined us through the day to spread the joy of knitting!

Knit in Public with Kniterary

I am almost ready for WWKIP day! Are you?

There will be a gazebo tent up at the side of the shop to protect any knitters from the sun or (heaven forbid) rain. In the event of rain anyone will be welcome to knit in Kniterary.
Coffee Time is 2 doors to the south and Tim Horton's is 3 blocks north.
If you take a stroll through downtown Whitby while you are here make sure to get a business card or flyer from each shop that you visit. I will give an extra 1% off any purchases up to 10% for every one you bring to me.
So far I have talked to:
Hair Express (in the plaza beside Coffee Time). They do cuts for $14.50/$19.50 and wash, cut and style for $25.50.
Sacred Quest (across John Street from Kniterary) which is a spiritual book and gift store.

Fitness Junky at 148 Brock Street North. The store sells active wear for women and has plus sizes in yoga wear.

Second Story Books at 103 Mary Street West in the Pearson's Lanes. The store for book lovers. She has only been open for one month and sells new and used books.

Dragonfly Home and Garden Accents also at 103 Mary St. W. in Pearson's Lanes. They sell a fun selection of gift items.

Essence Cafe and Tea Room. Specialty coffee and teas and gourmet salads would be a good place to drop by for a light lunch to eat in or take out. They are also at 103 Mary ST.W!

Audry Janes lingerie and casual wear at 135 Byron Street N is on Pearson's Lanes porch as well.

All these shops are willing to give their business cards to you to bring back to Kniterary as proof of your visit to them. Make sure to take some time and see what downtown Whitby has to offer. You can visit other stores in the downtown area and bring back a card as proof and I will honour them for an extra percent off.

All yarns and knitting accessories will be 5% off. You will be able to increase your discount to 10% by bringing in a non-perishable donation or a donation of a knit or crochet item. And, as mentioned above you could get up to an additional 10% off by visiting local shops and bringing back up to 10 business cards. (every card is worth 1 additional percent). You could get up to 20% off your purchase with a donation and by visiting 10 downtown businesses!

Help make a Tree Cozy for our Parking Lot Tree! See here.and here and here for ideas for tree cozies. Ok, some may think it is a waste of knitting time and energy but think of that sweater that you will never finish warming up the tree or swatches that are cluttering up the stash. And.....The tree will just make us smile everytime we see it!

Michelle of Sweetsheep has dyed 10 skeins of WWKIP colourway of sock yarn. The cost is $24.09 per 100 gram skein and is beautiful blues, greens and browns. We will be taking orders for more once we run out because it is sure to sell quickly.

Unfortunately Michelle will probably not make it to the festivities on Saturday because her fiance had an accident on Monday and is going into surgery today. He will be ok but send warm thoughts of healing his way. He is an Arborist so I think that making our tree cozy should be in honour of Chris and his healing.

Spinning Wheel Alpacas (SWA) is hosting a Shearing & Fibre Show
May 31st from 10am-4pm
Located at 1857 Regional Road 3, Enniskillen, ON L0B.

Directions:
Fifteen minutes north of the 401.
From the West, exit the 401 at Courtice Road then follow these directions.

From the East, exit the 401 at Waverly Road then follow these directions.

Admission is by donation with the proceeds going to charity.

* Nancy & Garth Hutchinson are hosting the event.
* At this outdoor event, there will be charity raffles, fibre demonstrations, weavers, spinners, food, very cute Aplacas, three beautiful white dogs and a duck.

Summer is fast approaching. Although with the cold days we’ve been having you would not know it!

With summer comes thoughts of Christmas! Yes ….Christmas! Now is the time to start planning your hand knit Christmas presents.
Come in with your ideas and check out what I have in the shop! If you have no ideas yet come and find a book or get a magazine to inspire you! You can also sign up for a summer class to help you learn a new technique or give you time to create something unique!

Classes in June include Knitting without a Cable Needle on June 4thand Lace Knitting (where you will make a lace scarf) June 5, 12 and 19th.
Would you like to make a sock for someone? Learn the basics in my mini sock class on June 7th.
Do you know someone who wants to learn to knit? Tell them about the Beginner Skills class on June 18th.

May 10th was an amazing day here at 229 Brock Street North with both Kniterary and Hedgehog Stitchery filled to capacity with shoppers all day long. Thanks to all my volunteer knitters who mad the day even more special! Michelle’s Crock Pot dyed yarn that was done then is now on the shelves and ready for purchase!

Special Events coming up include:

May 31st : Kniterary will have a booth at The Spinning Wheel Alpaca Farm in Enniskillin. A great day trip for you and the children who can pet the Alpacas!

June 14th is World Wide Knit in Public Day (WWKIP) and Kniterary is host to the event in Durham. Come and bring your knitting! You will be able to relax on the grounds of the shop or venture forth into the local parks or downtown establishments. I am coordinating a downtown shops tour where you will be able to get your WWKIP Passports signed or stamped for discounts at Kniterary. Saturday was a successful day for both Kniterary and Hedgehog Stitchery!

Many knitters came to join in and helped to create the fun atmosphere that Kniterary has.

Vickie showed off her new room full of Cross stitch supplies!

I still made time to help out with knitting enquiries! That is what I am here for!

I hope that everyone who attended had as great a time as I did!

Wow! What a day at Kniterary! The shop was packed wall to wall all day long!

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the day a success! A special thanks to my volunteer knitters who added just the perfect bit of fun to the event!

After the great day....I am without a functioning web site again! I'll be changing hosts this week so don't fret!

Hello Kniterarians!

This Saturday May 10th is a day of Celebration at Kniterary!

We are celebrating the Grand Opening of Hedgehog Stitchery, the 1st Anniversary of my proprietorship of Kniterary and the 2nd Anniversary of Kniterary your not so ordinary yarn shop!

There will be guest designers, food, door prizes and deals (Most yarns and accessories will be at least 10% off)!

Michelle of The Sweet Sheep will be demonstrating Crock Pot Dyeing at Noon and 2 PM. We will also have special priced, limited edition celebration sock yarn available for the day that Michelle has dyed.

Would anyone be interested in volunteering an hour or so on Saturday to knit in the shop? I hope that having knitters around will encourage any non-knitters to take the plunge. There will an extra 5% off any purchase for your time! The only request that I have is that you work on a project that uses yarn purchased at Kniterary. If you are interested please let me know what approximate time you plan on being in between 10 AM and 5 PM.
